Why a Cold Shower is Better Than a Hot One
Dear Doctors Health Press e-Bulletin reader,
Now that summer’s here as of this past weekend, the hottest health tip may actually be the coldest one.
I’m talking about the dreaded cold shower. Yes, most of us prefer the relaxing hot shower, but what you might not know is that a cold shower may actually offer health benefits.
So…what can something as uncomfortable as a cold shower do for you besides help you save on your energy bill? Here are the highlights:
Boosts Hair and Skin Health: When you take a warm or hot shower, you are actually drying your skin; with a cold shower, your cuticles and pores actually tighten up, which prevents them from clogging. A cold shower can actually seal up the pores in your skin and scalp as well, preventing dirt from getting inside them, and doesn’t strip your body or hair of beneficial oils in the way a hot shower does.
Increases Alertness: The shock that the body experiences when the sensation of cold water hits it actually increases your overall oxygen intake, because of the deep breathing that occurs in that process. With that said, your heart rate will also increase, which releases a surge in blood flow throughout the body.
Helps with Weight Concerns: There are two types of fat: white fat and brown fat. White fat is created when you take in more calories than your body actually needs in order to function. These calories are not burned for energy, which means they pile up all over your body in the form of white fat that’s difficult to get rid of. Brown fat, present in the body since birth and activated by cold temperatures, on the other hand, actually burns the calories that white fat holds on to. So, if you regularly take cold showers, you’re activating that calorie-burning brown fat.
Fights Stress: Instead of allowing the shower to heat up, just dive right in there like you would if you were swimming in the ocean. The cool impact of the water will increase your tolerance of stress and even your tolerance of certain diseases. The cold sensation actually decreases the uric acid levels in your body and also increases glutathione, an antioxidant that ensures that all the other antioxidants are doing their jobs.
Improves Circulation: A cold shower can actually improve the circulation in your body by forcing blood to surround the organs. The blood circulating will force the arteries to work more efficiently to pump blood throughout the body. This can be great for people with heart problems.
Relieves Depression: Having a tough week or a tough month, even? A cold shower will do just the trick; the cold receptors in the skin send an extreme amount of electrical impulses all the way to the brain. This triggers an anti-depressive effect, elevating your mood.
Taking cold showers may take some getting used to, but the benefits certainly seem worth it, impacting both your health and your mood. If you are not great with the cold, start with your regular hot shower and, towards the end, gradually add in more cold water to cool you down and trigger all those fantastic benefits.
